How To Troubleshoot Your Pocket PC Device

Before attempting to troubleshoot, it is always a good idea to backup your data. It is strongly recommended that you do this before continuing any further. If you are not comfortable or knowledgeable with your Desktop PC or your PDA device. You should read your owners manual for more information or contact the manufacturer.

  1. ActiveSync will not restore from a backup.

  2. My new Pocket PC will not perform a USB synchronization after I upgraded ActiveSync to 3.1.

  3. After a hard reset ActiveSync is asking to create a new partnership before I can synchronize my Pocket PC.

  4. When synchronizing with my Desktop pc my Pocket PC is not recognized by Windows 2000 when using a USB cradle.

  5. I have performed a hard reset and my 3rd party applications are missing from my Pocket PC.

  6. I get the error message "Synchronization cannot be started because you are not able to log on to the network...." when I sync.

  7. When I remove my headphones from my iPAQ I get no sound.

  8. My Pocket PC drains my battery even after it is turned off.


ActiveSync will not restore from a backup.

Cause: The Regional Settings do not match the settings.

Solution:

  1. Open Settings from the Start Menu.

  2. In the System section, click on Regional Settings and adjust as needed.

My new Pocket PC will not perform a USB synchronization after I upgraded ActiveSync to 3.1.

Cause:

Your connection settings for ActiveSync 3.1 are set for your old Pocket PC device. There is no new partnership for your new Pocket PC.

Solution:

  1. In ActiveSync go to File and choose Connection Settings.

  2. Check the box next to "Allow USB Connection With This Desktop Computer".

  3. Click OK and place your Pocket PC device into the USB cradle.

  4. Sync your device, ActiveSync will attempt to establish a new partnership.

  5. If this fail, perform a soft reset on your Pocket PC and reboot your Desktop PC.

After a hard reset ActiveSync is asking to create a new partnership before I can synchronize my Pocket PC.

Cause: A hard reset was performed setting your Pocket PC to its factory settings.

Solution: You will need to create a new partnership.

When synchronizing with my Desktop pc my Pocket PC is not recognized by Windows 2000 when using a USB cradle.

Cause: Windows 2000 has identified your Pocket PC as an unknown USB device. The drivers were not installed properly.

Solution:

  1. Print or copy these instructions. This is for Windows 2000 only.

  2. Remove your Pocket PC from the USB cradle.

  3. Go to My Computer, right click and select Properties.

  4. Click Hardware and then Device Manager.

  5. Right click USB Devices and select Uninstall.

  6. Go to the Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs.

  7. Locate ActiveSync and Uninstall it.

  8. Reinstall ActiveSync.

  9. Perform a soft reset on your Pocket PC.

  10. Place your Pocket PC back into the USB cradle and perform a sync.

I have performed a hard reset and my 3rd party applications are missing from my Pocket PC.

Cause: Improper backup or the applications were not backup before performing a hard reset.

Solution:

From the Tools menu in ActiveSync choose one of the following:

  1. Full or Incremental Backups.

  2. Backup every time a synchronization is performed.

  3. Backup Now.

I get the error message "Synchronization cannot be started because you are not able to log on to the network...." when I sync.

Cause: Your Pocket PC is unable to communicate with Outlook 2000.

Solution:

Check to see if you installed Outlook 2000. If you have not, you will need to do the following:

  1. In ActiveSync under File, select Delete Partnership.

  2. Remove your Pocket PC from the cradle.

  3. Install Outlook 2000. Open Outlook and then Close it.

  4. Place your Pocket PC back into the cradle and establish a new partnership.

If Outlook 2000 is already installed then do the following:

  1. In ActiveSync under File, select Delete Partnership.

  2. Open Outlook 2000 and go to Tools and select Options.

  3. Click on the Mail Delivery tab.

  4. Click the Reconfigure Mail Support button.

  5. Select Internet Only if you have a Corporate or Workgroup Station option  already selected. Or select Corporate or Workgroup Station option if Internet Only is already selected.

  6. Place your Pocket PC back into the cradle an create a new partnership.

When I remove my headphones from my iPAQ I get no sound.

Cause: There is problem with your iPAQ. This is only on some modules and Compaq is aware of the problem.

Solution:

Call Compaq directly at 1-800-652-6672.

My Pocket PC drains my battery even after it is turned off.

Cause:

This is normal and in the off mode your Pocket PC draws a minimum amount from the battery so that it can maintain the information stored in RAM.

Solution:

To extend your battery life, do the following:

  1. Turn off the back light or set the back light to a dimmer setting.

  2. Reduce the number of times you listen to audio files between recharges.

  3. Reduce your read and write to your Compact Flash between recharges.

  4. Monitor on how you use your Pocket PC between recharges.
